We are enduring very difficult times of lies and deception, murder and violence. The resurrection of Jesus assures us of the ultimate victory of God, and the ultimate triumph of truth and life.

There are pains, however, that are worth celebrating. Pains rooted in love. Pains patterned after the very pains endured by Christ on the cross. The pains of a mother at childbirth.

We are never short of instances of disorder nowadays. We are aware how our cherished values and virtues are under attack, threatened to be replaced by illusions of order grounded on frustration, lies, irrationality, and ambition.

Be that as it may, every day, every hour, every second that ticks by, God invites us look for the light and follow it. Only by following the Light and those entrusted to keep the light burning bright, we may finally achieve the peace we so desire in this world.

Our Lenten practices, like what Jesus did to the money changers’ tables, overturn what sin has turned upside down in order to reclaim the original God-perspective.  Fasting and abstinence turn deprivation into sufficiency.

When we see the cross on each other’s forehead, I hope we remember that the heart that truly loves is really a cross that truly saves. And that ain’t all that ugly after all. In fact, it is even quite beautiful. 

Perhaps one of the messages of today’s readings is to examine how much white noise our lives suffer from. Can we make more room for silence in our lives? And can we exert a greater effort to listen–not just to other people, but also–perhaps more importantly–to ourselves and to God?

Indeed, hope is the virtue of a heart that can see tomorrow. Conversely, we can say that despair is the vice of a heart that can see no tomorrow, a heart that locks itself in the dark, imprisons itself in the past, the delusion of a heart that merely goes…
