This is to inform you that FR. MARIANO Y. VARELA, S. J. died yesterday evening in the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center, on the campus of Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City. Fr. Mar, 97, had been bed-ridden for some time. He entered the Society in 1946 and was ordained to the presbyterate in 1959.
Given continued virus restraints, Fr. Mar’s remains were cremated this morning and the ashes brought to Loyola House of Studies for in-house memorial Masses there and in other communities on campus. They will then be kept in the JHWC until, in early March, a proper funeral Mass and inurnment in the Province cemetery at Sacred Heart Novitiate can be scheduled.
