In this post, we collect the various homilies delivered during the wake and the funeral of Fr. Rudy Malasmas, SJ. This is our way of saying ayo-ayo, goodbye, to a beloved Jesuit... ![]() Funeral Homily for Fr. Rudy, SJFr. Rudy was first and foremost a Jesuit priest. He knew his priorities because he knew Who had called him. It was this call and this Caller that formed all the other activities of his life. In the renovation of the Davao Loyola House Jesuit Residence some years ago, a house chapel was built two doors down from Fr. Rudy’s room on the first floor. He used to speak of the House Guest who resided there with awe and wonder... (Dan McNamara, SJ) Fr. John WayneJohn Wayne --that’s what Fr. Rudy liked to be called. Not because he looked like the Duke—tall, dark and handsome. Or walked that distinctive cowboy walk. Or because he could ride a horse, or was quick on the draw. But, simply because “John Wayne died with his boots on.” At least in the movies... (Ning Puentevella, SJ) Pure Heart and SoulIn this homily preached during the school-wide Mass for Fr. Rudy, Fr. Mike Pineda says "ayo-ayo" to one of Ateneo de Davao's founding fathers... For God and for the Poor People of GodFr. Rudy Malasmas would spend almost all his time with the poor, or helping the poor. And although he knew, or had taught, almost all the rich and the famous in Davao, Fr. Rudy would often be absent from the many dinners and celebrations of the rich and the powerful of Davao to which the Jesuits were invited. Fr. Rudy would instead be with the poor or with the simple, dedicated people who worked with him for the poor... (Arsenio Jesena, SJ) Photos courtesy of Bong Eliab |
The more than 300 men of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus serve in five universities, numerous schools for basic education, two diocesan major seminaries, three urban and five rural parishes, four retreat houses, and a variety of centers for spirituality, social action, communication, and socio-pastoral services. In addition, we have Jesuits serving in the foreign missions, in Cambodia, China, and East Timor.
None of these ministries can continue without the generous help of benefactors like you. Your gifts truly keep us going. They free us to serve wherever the need is greatest, here or abroad; they support our ministries, enable us to educate new laborers and sustain care for those worn out in service.
Our financial resources are diminishing even as demands of service to the Church grow. For this reason, I am forced to turn again and beg from you who have so often been our partners in ministry. If you can, please make a tax-deductible contribution to support our efforts.
