In this post, we have collected the tributes and homilies delivered during the wake and the funeral of Bishop Cisco. Links to the writings of the Bishop, images, and other resources are also included...

My Tears Flow
"What does Bishop Cisco Claver mean to the Church in the Philippines and beyond?" Archbishop Quevedo, in remarks delivered during the funeral of Bishop Claver, shares not just about another pastor but about his dearest friend...

The Cook Has Been Made a Bishop!
Cisco was living in a small community with several other Jesuits studying at Colorado. They used to take turns cooking. One evening, when it was his turn, he carried the food to the supper table where the others were seated and said: “Did you hear the news?” When they asked what it was, he announced: “Your cook has been made a bishop!”  Fr. Cal Poulin, SJ shares his memories of Bishop Francisco Claver, SJ in this funeral homily...

A Pastor WITHIN the Community
"On November 18, 1976, radio station DXBB, operated by the Prelature of Malaybalay in Bukidnon, was raided and closed by the military of President Marcos. The pretext was that it was secretly sending messages to the N.P.A guerillas in the hills. The reality was actually much worse: DXBB was revealing the abuses of martial law and encouraging critical thinking among the people: a heinous crime!  Bishop Francisco Claver responded with a series of pastoral letters, critical and hard-hitting, one every week, read in his name in all the parishes of the Prelature. He took his stand as shepherd of his people..." Fr. Jack Carroll, SJ remembers the pastor that was Bishop Cisco...

Remembering Bishop Cisco, SJ...
"He was really and truly a great man. A noble tribute to his great Igorot people, to us as Filipinos, to the Church in our country, and (as a blurb in his final book says, if I remember) the kind of bishop who embodied the hope of Vatican II, a man for the future of the Church. And from him, in a true sense, I learned so much what loving one’s country, what loving the Church means, in deed and in truth." Fr. Catalino Arevalo pays tribute Bishop Francisco Claver...

The more than 300 men of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus serve in five universities, numerous schools for basic education, two diocesan major seminaries, three urban and five rural parishes, four retreat houses, and a variety of centers for spirituality, social action, communication, and socio-pastoral services. In addition, we have Jesuits serving in the foreign missions, in Cambodia, China, and East Timor.

None of these ministries can continue without the generous help of benefactors like you. Your gifts truly keep us going. They free us to serve wherever the need is greatest, here or abroad; they support our ministries, enable us to educate new laborers and sustain care for those worn out in service.

Our financial resources are diminishing even as demands of service to the Church grow. For this reason, I am forced to turn again and beg from you who have so often been our partners in ministry. If you can, please make a tax-deductible contribution to support our efforts.
